Councillor Winter’s Monthly Update – July 2023
In my capacity as Mayor of Newmarket, I was honoured to be involved in the recent Royal visit by Her Majesty Queen Camilla. Having first been to the Racing School to mark its 40th anniversary, Her Majesty then visited the National Horseracing Museum to unveil the Charles Church painting “The Belvoir Huntsman, John Holliday”. This work was commissioned by the British Sporting Art Trust, and may be viewed in the galleries at Palace House within the NHRM.
Speaking of the Museum – be sure to pay a visit to The Urban Frame – Mutiny In Colour exhibition while you can – a very exciting collection including works by famous artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, and Tracey Emin. The NHRM is open 6 days a week 10am-5pm (closed on Mondays) and this special exhibition of contemporary artwork will be available to view until 1st October.
Have you noticed that the High Street planters have been refreshed with their new bedding and the hanging baskets are in place? They look so bright and jolly in the summer sunshine. I trust they will bring you a little joy when you see them as you walk past or drive along the street.
Newmarket Town Council waved a sorrowful goodbye to Christy, our Events Manager this month, who has moved away from the area. After six years of organising so many events and entertainment for the people of Newmarket, her experience and dedication will be sorely missed. Christy was the person behind the scenes who facilitated such occasions as the recent Jubilee and Coronation celebrations, the Soapbox Derby, the Remembrance Day parades, and the children’s activities in the Memorial Gardens over the summer holidays, and many more. We wish her every success for the future.
We are in the “Summer of Butterflies”. Newmarket BID has many activities in July and August, including amazing butterfly installations around the town. Visit lovenewmarket.co.uk/events to find out more about Newmarket in Colour.
Newmarket Town Council is running a Butterfly Workshop for children on 1st July 10am til 1pm – do drop in to help make a butterfly mural and participate in other butterfly themed crafts, or take a walk through the gardens and see our giant butterfly mural just inside the front gates.
As the summer term comes to an end, do remember our summer activity afternoons on Thursdays in the Memorial Gardens. There will be some free healthy lunches available for children who would normally get a free school meal, to try to help out those families who may struggle without the school provision. This initiative is sponsored by West Suffolk Council through their Holiday Activity and Food Programme. Do get in touch with your child’s school if you believe you qualify and would like to take up this offer, or contact Newmarket Town Council for further information.
