The Grenadier Guards
The Grenadier Guards is the senior regiment of The Guards Division. It was raised by Charles II in 1656 when in exile on the Continent following his crushing defeat at the Battle of Worcester on 3rd September 1651.
400 exiled Royalists joined the Regiment which fought its first battle two years later. Since then has it has fought in every major European campaign in which the British Army has been engaged. It fielded four battalions in the First World War and six battalions in the Second World War. Most recently it served in the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan where Corporal Ashworth, who had previously served in Nijmegen Company, won a posthumous Victoria Cross in 2012.

The Regiment and the four other regiments of Foot Guards take pride in their dual role of protecting the Monarch, now a mostly ceremonial function in London, and serving on operations as an integral part of Britain’s field army.
