Newmarket Town Council goes electric!
Our long-awaited electric van has finally arrived. The Council took the decision back in May 2022 to move away from a diesel vehicle with all the associated emissions and pollutants, and replace it with a cleaner, more environmentally-friendly electric van for use around the town. Production and port delays have been a challenge as we had hoped to receive it in August, but alas it was not to be. We took delivery at the end of February, and we are glad to no longer be contributing to local air pollution.
The new play area had its official opening on 15th February. The weather was very kind to us, and there were plenty of children in the gardens taking advantage of being outdoors in the fresh air during half term week, and making use of the new equipment. We briefly evicted them from the fenced part for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, but there were some obviously very keen individuals who dodged around the barriers to get back in. I presume that means the play area is a hit! The roundabout in particular was looking very popular.
This month should see the completion of this phase of the clocktower refurbishments, and therefore the removal of the protective hoardings and scaffolding. The entrance to our town should once again be an attractive sight – do take a look up at the re-gilded weathervane on the top. There will be a dedication plaque erected at the base of the clocktower shortly, honouring the Platinum Jubilee of our late Queen, Elizabeth II, and we shall host a small ceremony to reveal it.
I was delighted to see that so many of you took advantage of the Moving Cinema on the Severals. I hope everyone that attended filled in the feedback forms so we are one step closer to having a permanent cinema back here in Newmarket.
Don’t forget to register to vote in preparation for the upcoming elections, and remember to take your photo ID with you to the polling station on May 4th.
