It has been a busy month. I was pleased to be at the reopening of Newmarket Library in the Guineas Shopping Centre. This is a wonderful facility for everyone and the library is now more easily accessible.
The Bill Tutte Committee met to look at the applications for the Bill Tutte Scholarship. There were three young people who met the criteria: to live near Newmarket; to have achieved a grade A in mathematics A level; and to be accepted to study mathematics or computer science at university. We interviewed each candidate. We were pleased to offer them each a scholarship of £1000 for the three years of their university course.
I was asked to help judge the Racing Yards at the Newmarket Open Weekend. It was a wonderful experience to visit so many Yards in one morning. I was impressed by the way each Yard welcomed its visitors and delighted to look at the beautiful historic buildings that is such a unique feature of Newmarket.
I also travelled to RAF Mildenhall for the Joan Mann Special Sports Day. This event is organised by the personnel of the United State Air Force. It is for young disabled athletes living in the locality and there are numerous activities in which they can compete. I was given the honour of awarding medals to the winning competitors. It was heart-warming to see the broad smiles of delight on their faces when they received their medals.
Lastly we arranged for 10 000 daffodil bulbs to be planted around the edge of the Green near the Yellow Brick Road. We were helped by children from the local Scouts movement. I was so pleased to see so many children enthused to be planting bulbs. We all look forward to a sea of yellow daffodils in the spring.
