It is the time of year to reflect on the events of the last 12 months. No one could have predicted the effect of the pandemic on our daily lives. For those who have lost their loved ones and those who have suffered severe ill health I send my sincerest condolences.
Despite the terrible circumstances, even in adversity there were some positive outcomes. During that first lockdown, when traffic was significantly reduced, we were able to hear the birdsong loud and clear. I discovered new footpaths and was able to enjoy the wonders of spring like never before. Our community came together to clap for the key workers and in Newmarket we set up a helpline with countless volunteers assisting anyone who needed help.
A feature of the Helpline was the collaboration of so many organisations, both public and private, working together for the benefit of the town. It was this group that organised the spectacular Father Christmas tour around the streets of Newmarket. It was wonderful to see the smiles of the children when they saw Santa in his sleigh and then received their surprise Christmas present.
Throughout the lockdown Love Newmarket BID has strived to promote our town centre. They organised the ‘shop local’ campaign and joined with the Town Council to bring the Christmas decorations and lights to the High Street. I was asked to judge the Christmas window displays in the shops. Once again I was reminded of how many small independent shops that we have. Congratulations to ‘Flowers Made With Love’ in Sun Lane for winning the competition, which was organised by the BID.
I do hope you were able to enjoy your Christmas Day, even if it was quieter than usual. Now we must look forward to a New Year and hope that it turns out much better than the last.
