Newmarket Weatherby Crossing Update

A second round of the public inquiry took place in the Memorial Hall, from the 14th – 16th October.

Network Rail argues that the Weatherby Crossing is not a public right of way, proposing the closure of the railway foot crossing. However, the residents and Newmarket Town Council argue that the crossing must be protected as is the only walkway linking the north and south side of Newmarket

We received an excellent legal representation by the Council’s Barrister, but the Town Council is now facing legal costs of over £20.000. We approached neighbouring councils for support and wait to hear whether this request can be met.
A special thanks go to Dr Rachel Wood for her in-depth research and detailed statement, as well as those residents who gave evidence and provided witness statements.

The inquiry will continue 2-9 November.
