Councillor Winters Monthly Update – March 2024
Hello, March! The month where we eagerly welcome Spring to grace us with its presence with those lovely, bright mornings and soak up the longer lighter evenings. I have been looking forward to seeing the daffodils in full bloom once again, it is so encouraging that Spring is on its way!
You may have read in my previous flyer that Newmarket Town Council had teamed up with Love Newmarket launching the ‘Shop Improvement Grant Scheme’. I am delighted to hear that so many local businesses jumped at this opportunity and very much look forward to seeing the improvements being made to shop fronts, contributing to our Town being made a more presentable one.
Whilst on the subject of opportunities, I thought it would be worth mentioning that on Tuesday, 19th March, West Suffolk Council will be hosting their ‘Newmarket Jobs, Skills and Well-being Fair’ from 10am to 12.30pm at the King Edward VII Memorial Hall. A great event that offers candidates the chance to engage directly with businesses and training providers, enabling job seekers to explore different sectors and opportunities. If you are unable to attend on the day, you can still find out how West Suffolk Council can help by contacting skills@westsuffolk.gov.uk.
A polite reminder that the Memorial Gardens will be closed on Tuesday, 19th and Wednesday, 20th March for essential tree work. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause; however, we were glad to have been able to liaise with the Tree Surgeon to keep the gardens open for the February Half-Term and rearrange to a later date to allow for as much play-time as possible. It was wonderful to see the gardens so full of fun and laughter and we look forward to seeing more of this as the weather improves.
You heard it here first – we are in the process of having the splash pad prepared for the Summer and are hoping for good weather to enable us to get it switched on for all to enjoy maybe a little earlier than usual. That being said, as April is known for its showers…it may just be the normal time of May. Watch this space!
You may have noticed that the engraved blue pearl granite tablet which is edged with rosemary for remembrance has now been installed at the War Memorial, we are delighted with the outcome. Here you will also find two benches with the phrases ‘Reflect and Remember’ and ‘To Those We Lost’. Please do join us on Saturday, 23rd March at Midday where we will be holding the first annual commemoration ceremony, a chance to talk and share experiences. Located at The War Memorial Gardens at the Clock Tower Roundabout behind the Severals Pavilion building.
Don’t forget to register to vote in preparation for the upcoming elections, and remember to take your photo ID with you to a preferred polling station on Thursday, 2nd May.
