Councillor Winter’s Monthly Update – May 2023
At the time of writing, my year as mayor is drawing to a close, and by the time you are reading this, we will have a newly-elected Town Council, with faces both new and old. It will be a very interesting time for all of us, as councillors settle into their new roles and responsibilities, and join the various committees and working groups we have, and the next mayor is chosen. Do keep an eye on the town council website, where you will be able to find all the latest news and updates.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my term as Newmarket’s Mayor. Together we have experienced some great things, from the big weekend events of the Jubilee and the Soapbox Derby to the small days of the community bulb-planting and the opening of the renovated playground. We have also experienced sombre times after the loss of our Queen, but are excited to celebrate the King’s Coronation with you.
We have endeavoured to make our town entrances and open spaces look more appealing with the daffodil bulbs, and have taken over tackling the weeds in the High Street in recent weeks, and the tending of the War Memorial garden. We have a new contract with Jockey Club Estates who will be looking after flowerbeds and the High Street planters and hanging baskets, and we are fortunate enough to have a custodian from West Suffolk Council in the cemetery who is taking great pains to keep it both attractive and safe for all visitors.
Please do come along to the annual meeting of Newmarket electors on 18th May at 6.15pm in the Memorial Hall. There you will be able to view details of some of our accomplishments and events that have taken place over the last municipal year, as well as read reports from the chairs of each committee. There will be an open session to address the councillors and ask questions if you wish.
