Councillor Winter’s Monthly Update – April 2023
Newmarket Town Council will shortly be bidding farewell to its longest-serving councillor and former mayor, Michael Jefferys.
Having been a founder-member of the council in 1999, he has represented the Scaltback ward and worked diligently for the interests of Newmarket residents ever since. Councillor Jefferys has chaired numerous committees and working groups over the years, not least of which was the steering group responsible for implementing the Covid helpline which benefitted so many people.
Councillor Jefferys has decided that the moment has come to forsake us in favour of spending more time on his allotment, and he will not be standing for re-election in May. I trust you will join me in wishing him well for his richly-deserved retirement from the council, and for many happy hours encouraging growth and development in the world of gardening instead.
It disappoints me to have to write about this, but there have been some accidents and some close shaves regarding dogs off leashes in and around the Heath. I would ask you all to kindly be aware that dog walkers should follow the signs at the bottom of the Heath displayed by the Jockey Club indicating when and where it is safe to walk your dog, away from the horses. This should be after 1pm when most of the exercising is complete.
I would also remind you that it is against the law to fail to pick up your dog waste, even in the open spaces of the Heath, or the Severals, or in fact anywhere at all. It is extremely unpleasant to see dog faeces littering our green spaces or around our footpaths and homes. It poses a risk to public health due to Toxocariasis, but also can transmit potentially fatal diseases such as Parvovirus or intestinal worms from dog to dog.
On that note, please remember that the entire Memorial Garden is designated dog-free, not just the play areas. You are not permitted to walk your dog through the grounds.
Free biodegradable dog waste pick-up bags are available every week from Reception at the Memorial Hall. Please be a responsible owner and pick up after your pet, and keep them controlled on a short lead around horses for the sake of everyone’s safety.
With the Coronation now just around the corner, St Mary’s Church will be hosting a celebratory service on Sunday 7th May at 3pm. All welcome.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all on the Severals on Monday 8th May for a wonderful afternoon of music and fun for all the family, beginning at 1pm. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some splendid weather.
Finally, one more date for your diary – the Annual Meeting of the Town will be held on Thursday 18th May at the Memorial Hall. After the formal proceedings, it will become an open session where electors may put questions to councillors, and there will be a display showing some of the things the council has implemented in the last year.
