Councillor Winter’s Monthly Update – February 2023
I do hope you are taking advantage of the Warm Spaces Initiative around the town in this cold, dreary weather. The Racing Centre, The Library, and All Saints Church are all offering various services including a welcoming atmosphere, companionship, guidance, and nourishing food.
In addition, there are various companies offering free (or very cheap) meals for children with paying adults during half term 13th-17th February, though sadly you may have to travel further afield as none so far published are within Newmarket. Please visit our website or Facebook page for details.
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to a Newmarket High Street stalwart, A S Wigg & Son – as Michael takes his retirement this month.
We wish all the best to him and his family as they begin a new chapter in their lives, having been on our High Street for over forty years.
Work on our landmark clocktower continues. It is currently undergoing additional cleaning and stonework, alongside repainting of the clock hands and regilding of the weathervane. I’m anticipating a spectacular result that can be admired by all who happen to pass by, or pay it a special visit. It was built in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria and the refurbishment is dedicated to the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
Are you registered to vote, or thinking of standing as a councillor? Newmarket Town Council has 18 councillor seats across the wards, and the local elections on Thursday 4th May 2023 are fast approaching. This is your chance to choose the councillors who will represent our town for the next four years.
Please be aware that there is new legislation in place requiring you to bring photo ID with you in order to vote in person at a polling station.
If you don’t have any photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
