”We are so lucky to live in a town like Newmarket, surrounded as we are by acres of green heathland. The view from the top of Warren Hill is magnificent. Our town is unique with its training yards and horse walks winding their way through the town centre. We forget how impressive it is to see a string of racehorses making their way to the training areas.
But the town could be better. Our Town Council has started a campaign to clear up all the unsightly areas that currently disfigure our town. The main responsibility for cleaning up our town sits with both West Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council, but we hope to be able to work in partnership with these other Councils. If funding is not available then we will recruit volunteers. Together we can clean up our town.
The enquiry will soon be resumed into the proposed closure of the Weatherby Crossing, the footpath that crosses the railway line east of the railway station. Network Rail is claiming that the crossing is not a right of way, though the people of Newmarket have used the crossing since the railway was first built. Network Rail seem to have limitless funds to prosecute their case and the Town Council stands alone trying to defend the rights of our town. Unfortunately we have only limited funds to fight the case.
It was with greatest regret that we had to cancel the planned Christmas Fair and skating rink. With the Coronavirus resurging, we could not entertain the large number of our residents who would be attracted to a little bit of Christmas cheer. However, in partnership with BID, the Christmas lights will again decorate our town centre. The date for the switching on of the lights is Friday 20th November.”
