I was extremely pleased and honoured
to have been nominated and elected
to the office of Mayor for
2011/2012, by my fellow
Councillor’s.
Originally from Croydon, I moved to
Newmarket in 1985 having married
Tracey; a local girl. We celebrated
our 25th wedding anniversary in 2010
and have two sons; both of whom are
working in accountancy.
On leaving school, I joined the
Royal Navy and trained as an
Electrical Mechanic. I left the
forces in 1978 and have subsequently
held a number of management
positions in the office equipment
and social housing fields. I have
also worked at Newmarket Citizens
Advice Bureau as a volunteer
adviser.
I am currently employed as the Head
of Housing at Racing Welfare and am
responsible for the day to day
housing management of their Housing
Association’s property portfolio.
I was Deputy Mayor and Chairman of
the Finance & Policy committee
during 2010/11 and have been
actively involved in the development
of our new community facilities at
the King Edward VII Memorial Hall.
Our shared vision is to ensure a
sustainable and vibrant Newmarket
that meets with the expectations and
aspirations of all sections of our
community both now and into the
future. As Mayor, I will continue to
use my best endeavours to safeguard
the facilities and services that our
residents want.

I am 45, and I live and work in
Exeter Road, where I train horses in
Beverley House Stables, a property
which I have occupied since 1997. I
began training in Hamilton Road two
years previously, having moved to
the town in 1987. I am married to
Emma and have one son, Anthony, from
my previous marriage.
I am very proud to live in what I
regard as a very special town. As a
life-long lover of both horse-racing
and history, as well as a
professional trainer, I cherish
Newmarket's history and tradition,
which is so closely intertwined with
the history of horse-racing.
I feel that it is the duty of the
current generation to ensure that
Newmarket remains the greatest
horse-racing town in the world, and
that the training of racehorses can
continue indefinitely to run
harmoniously alongside and within
the overall life of the town – and
my primary aim in standing for the
council was to be in a position to
help to safeguard a future in which
Newmarket can continue to thrive
both as a training centre and as a
community in which all its
inhabitants can take pride.

Born 1935 (S.R.N. MSSch.FBChA)
In 1940 I attended Acting school and
went on to study shorthand and
became a Junior Reporter.
In 1950 I worked for the Bognor
Regis Observer and in 1953 I studied
Nursing and raised money for the
hospital, producing Pantomimes. I
met Jim and married in 1957. We have
one daughter Jacqueline, two sons
Peri and James and three Grandsons.
In 1958 Jim was employed by United
Africa Co. and we lived in Ghana and
Nigeria, where I became Director of
Studies - School of Careers, my role
involved getting youngsters to
University via the British Consul.
In 1979 we came back to the U.K. and
I became Chief Nursing Officer for P
& O. During the medicals I carried
out, I found that sea staff tended
to have bad feet; therefore I
decided to study Podiatry. I came
back to Newmarket in 1984 and worked
as a Podiatrist, and I am now
President of the East Anglian
Podiatry Association.
I served Forest Heath as a
Councillor and in 1986 was Chairman.
In 1996 I helped found Newmarket in
Bloom, Newmarket Carnival, served on
Crossroads and at the Citizens
Advice Bureau. As a member of West
Suffolk Community Health Council I
helped reconstruct Newmarket
Hospital.
My wish is to retain Newmarket
Hospital and expand the care
offered; to expand the Market and
ensure it is in a suitable location;
expand trade and continue the
pleasant atmosphere of the Town. I
will strive to listen to the needs
and suggestion of all residents.

I first came to Newmarket in 1966 as
a young girl and fell in love with
it. From then on I spent all my
school holidays here until moving
here permanently in 1977. Since then
Newmarket has been my home.
It has always been the most exciting
and vibrant place and I consider
myself lucky to live in this
wonderful location with so much to
offer. What could be better? A town
with so much history entwined with
an industry so unique, Newmarket is
renowned the world over as ‘The Home
of Horseracing’. I believe we need
to preserve this industry, do what
we can to promote the town and to
assist the Retailers Association
with their commitment to restore the
High Street to its former glory.
I am married to racehorse trainer
James Fanshawe and we have a
fourteen-year-old son Tom. We are
all very proud to live in one of the
most historic yard in town, namely
Pegasus Stables (formerly Falmouth
Stables) on the Snailwell Road,
which was built in 1886 by Fred
Archer the most prolific jockey of
his time.

We moved to Newmarket in 1986 and
our two daughters were brought up
and educated here. One is a trainee
solicitor and the other is a
research scientist.
My interests are walking, cycling,
reading and looking after our
various animals.
I have spent most of my career
working in manufacturing companies.
Following ten years in Unilever in
Sales and Marketing, I became
Director of the Mailing Systems
Division of a USA Office Equipment
Company. Later I joined a USA
Packaging Company and became
responsible for their export
business, including four years as
General Manager of a USA Subsidiary
based in Chicago. I now work with a
colleague setting up export
distributors for packaging machinery
companies.
I was elected to the Town Council in
2003. I was Town Mayor from 2005 to
2007 and the last 3 years I have
been Chairman of the Town Council’s
Community Services Committee.
My reason for being a Councillor is
to develop Newmarket as a Town. We
have recently built the Severals
Pavilion and we are engaged in
refurbishing our Memorial Hall as a
Council. Recent initiatives have
been to form a Retailers Association
to help the business of the Town. I
am also very concerned to get more
facilities for the youth of
Newmarket.
The key objective for me is to have
much more responsibility as a
Council for the Town and that will
enable us to get the best results
for our residents, visitors and
workers.

I was elected to the town council in
2003 and have been very involved in
the regeneration of the Memorial
Hall, being vice-chair for 2 years
and chair for 3 years. I look
forward to having an up-to-date
community hall, which Newmarket
residents can be proud of, being
completed this summer.
I was thrilled to be elected as
Deputy Mayor in 2007 and I initiated
the plastic carrier bag campaign,
which highlighted the misuse of
these products of the oil industry.
I am pleased to see that 4 years on,
many shoppers and traders have
changed their habits.
The following year I was honoured to
become Newmarket’s 8th Mayor, and
took the opportunity of attending
many social and ceremonial
occasions, promoting the best of
Newmarket.
Since retiring from teaching in
2007, I continue with after-school
tuition, work in 3 local gardens and
am active in local and regional
labour party politics. I also
support the blossoming career of my
wife’s artwork.
In September 2009, I started the
Newmarket Youth Council, where 2
elected pupils from each of the
local Newmarket schools have the
opportunity to discuss matters
related to them. Like Newmarket Town
Council, the Youth Council meet
monthly, decide on their own agenda
and invite selected community
leaders to talk with them.

I have lived and worked for over 40
years in Newmarket. Our son's were
born in Newmarket Hospital. They
attended local schools and
activities and continue to enjoy
living in the town.
Having worked in horse racing, the
local hospital and school, I feel I
have an all round knowledge of life
in Newmarket. On the Council I am on
Leisure Committee, which has
supported the Carnival, Battle of
the Bands, many Children's
entertainments to name a few of the
excellent work from this committee.
I am on Planning and Development and
also Community Services.
I am involved with "Cinema at
Newmarket" which successfully shows
films monthly at The Stables, also
the newly formed "Go Wild in
Newmarket" creating community owned
wild spaces for the people of
Newmarket to enjoy. Also the very
successful action group "ReNew”.
I aim to work with the Town and for
the Town to develop and improve
without losing its unique charm and
character with the help of all the
committed hard working people who
give their time so freely.

I lived in Wimbledon during the
Blitz but our house was semi
destroyed on 19th June 1944 by a V1.
My mother and two brothers reached
the shelter in time. I avoided
injury because I was behind an open
door which caught the flying glass.
Seven years later, I joined the
Royal Arsenal, Woolwich as an
engineering apprentice and remained
in MOD until 1994.
For two years I was Hemel Hempstead
Branch Secretary of the Amalgamated
Engineering Union (TASS) and have
been a member of the Institution of
Engineering & Technology since 1955.
(Formerly the IEE). My son teaches
Biology in Cambridge, eldest
daughter works in Cincinnati, Ohio
and my youngest worked on the film
“The Chicken Run” for Dreamworks.
In the evenings I was a private
tutor teaching children GCSE Physics
in their final year. I lived in
Spain from 2004 to 2010 and was Hon.
Secretary of the Royal British
Legion in Benalmadena, Malaga. I
served in RNVR from 1954 to 1957 and
then in TA REME from 1968 to 1982.
Now retired, I intend to join my
fellow Councillors in their work to
keep Newmarket a good place to live
in.
