Newmarket Town Centre
Vision Questionnaire
INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF NEWMARKET?
The Town Council are determined to work with
our residents and local organisations to
develop Newmarket as we would all like.
- We have been told that we needed
better playing facilities for the
youngsters; we have refurbished the
Memorial Gardens play area.
- We have been told that we needed
better sports facilities for all; we
have opened a new sports pavilion on the
Severals, together with a new cricket
pitch in association with Darley.
- We have been told that we should do
something about the Memorial Hall; we
are in the process of refurbishing it.
We have been told that we ought to
have a vision for the future of the Town
Centre; we have compiled
this questionnaire to seek your views in
order to write one. Therefore,
please download the questionnaire and
return it to the Town Clerk so that your
views can be recorded to help shape our
Vision.
The next stage in preparing the Vision is to
draft a document that takes into account the
points made during this consultation and
adopt it at a full Town Council meeting. It
is hoped that Forest Heath District and
Suffolk County Council will take note of our
Vision. Indeed it is hoped that FHDC will
adopt it formally as Supplementary Planning
Guidance; that is something they have to
take note of in all future planning
decisions.
Carnival 2010
The carnival theme was “Save Our Planet".
Organisation for the event started in
January, but it was all worthwhile because
on the day, the sun was shining, which made
the Carnival very successful. There were
3750 people in attendance.
The carnival procession set off from The
Severals, moving slowly through the High
Street to the Rowley Mile Racecourse.
Churches together, Newmarket Gym Club, and
Rainbows were the winning floats, Judged by
the Mayor – Cllr. Mick Jeffrey's, Cllr Hirst,
and Kay Dawson, it was a difficult decision
between all the floats, which included the
Horse Racing Museum and the British Legion.
St Felix played music from their float and
The Foley House PlayBus also entered. The
Fire Engine and Classic Cars, were leading
the parade, various walkers included
Jazzercise, The Hot Shots, and the Lions.
There were various stalls from the Royal
British Legion to the local Church,
home-made cakes to Bric a Brac. The rides
were popular attractions, as were the
classic cars, Fire Engine, Police Pod and
the Foley House PlayBus, there was even a
mobile library.
The biggest crowd puller was the various
dance groups, which included Newmarket
School of Dance, The Hotshots and the
Martial Arts who gave display of their
activities. The displays ended with the
tug-of-war competition; Newmarket
Policewomen were the winning team.
In the tea tent people enjoyed their tea and
home-made cakes. Outside, the beer tent and
food stalls were busy. Towards the late
afternoon the final awards were made and
people started to drift away.
The street collection raised £275.22 which
the Carnival Committee will match; this will
go to Acorn House Addenbrookes Sick
Children's Trust.
