Newmarket Refuse – Open Door, Depot Road,
Newmarket.
Opens 25th August, 10.00 - 16.00 daily
A Newmarket charity is to take over the
running of the town’s household waste
recycling centre so that it does not have to
close its doors to customers.
Newmarket Open Door, a well-established
charity which operates a nearby second-hand
superstore, has agreed to take over the site
and continue providing recycling services.
Newmarket Open Door already accepts a wide
range of goods, including furniture,
electrical equipment, white goods (such as
fridges and freezers), tools, computers,
clothing and household linen.
The charity has decided that by introducing
charges of between £3 and £12, depending on
the size of vehicle, it can accept the full
range of items. This means everything which
could go to the Household Waste Recycling
Centre can now be taken to Open Door.
The County Council will provide land at a
peppercorn rent, Newmarket Town Council has
agreed to contribute £15,000 towards keeping
the site going and Forest Heath District
Council will consider how it could
contribute at its full council meeting on 6
July.
Newmarket Household Waste Recycling Centre
was due to close permanently in July this
year because the County Council could no
longer afford to keep it, and six other
sites across Suffolk, open.
It closed as a council site on 31st July,
but will re-open as Open Door on 25th
August.
Opening hours will be 10am to 4pm, seven
days a week, and will accept the following:
- Green Waste
- Wood
- Paper
- Glass
- Textiles
|
- WEEE
- Cooking Oil
- Cardboard
- Soil/inert
- Cartons
|
- Batteries
- Printer Cartridges
- LPG Gas Bottles
- Metal
|
- Books
- Bikes
- Residual Waste
- Trade Waste

The schools have now painted their
designs on to a small horse, ready to join
the Carnival parade in June. The schools
horses have been kindly sponsored by Suffolk
County Councillor Bill Sadler.
Shadwell Stud has very generously offered to
fund the prize money, for the winning
school’s painted small horse to be judged at
the Carnival. They are also funding one
extra small horse.
One small horse funded by Newmarket Town
Council has been painted by St Nicholas
Hospice patients and staff. Racing Welfare
also has a small horse funded by FHDC, which
has been painted by a retired stable man.
There are 13 sponsors for the life size
horses. The last horse to be sponsored was a
syndicate of local businesses; David Jarvis
Cars, Ian Button cars and Lettergold, and
local artist Emily Jarvis will paint their
horse. Other sponsors include: Darley Stud,
Cheveley Park Stud, The National Stud, The
Jockey Club, Tattersalls, John Gosden Racing
LLP, The Bedford Lodge Hotel, Newmarket Town
Council, Forest Heath District Council,
Tesco Stores Ltd and Godolphin, The Guineas
Shopping Centre/Ashdown Phillips & Partners
Ltd.
Grateful thanks also to BBA Shipping who
transported the horses in one of their
lorries to Chassis Cabs in Bury St. Edmunds
where they were varnished.
On the evening of 16th June 2011 there will
be a Gala Evening attended by the artists
and sponsors, and a winner of the
competition will be chosen. The horses will
be displayed on the Severals on Friday 17th
June 2011 and at the Guineas Centre
throughout May and June.
Commemorative Bench Scheme
The Town Council’s commemorative bench
scheme; to place benches on the Severals,
and in the Memorial Gardens, has been a
great success and we have had a good
response from residents, wishing to sponsor
a bench in memory of their loved ones.
The benches are manufactured by Whitehouse
Enterprises, who offer work experience for
adults with disabilities, and are made of
100% recycled composite plastic seating
planks, with cast iron legs, and are
supplied with a brass effect plaque,
engraved with an inscription.
Sponsorship of the bench is a one off fee of
£395 & VAT; this includes purchase of 1
fully assembled Stour Bench (delivery
included), one brass effect plaque (fitting
and engraving included) with engraved
inscription of your choice (up to 20 words),
installation and lifelong maintenance of the
bench.
If you are interested in sponsoring a bench
in memory of someone close to you contact
Vicky Bright on 01638 667227 or email
